1981 porsche 911 distributor timing changing. Distributor gear seems fine but timing mark changes when turn over engine. Could crankshaft distributor drive gear be the problem?

Try resetting the valve timing, also inspect distributor drive gear

Don't know if you got an answer yet, but if not the most common problem is that the distributor is worn. These distributors suffer from two problems, one is that the bushings wear causing the shaft to move around and some times impact on the impluse transmitter posts. The next problem is that the springs wear out which allows the advance weights to move prematurely as well as not returning correctly. I can fix this for you at www. Porschetechnik. Com
