I was told you can make sure your at tdc buy watching and wait for second valve on drivers side head to come all the up then you at tdc. Is this true and if so how would you correct it

Pull no 1 spark plug and turn engine by hand have someone place a finger over No1 plug hole, stop when they feel compression building, check timing make, turn untill pointer aligns with 0 this is TDC indicated, if valve timing is correct.

So update got car started and runs but when I give it gas it back fires through the carb any ideas

Recheck the valve and ignition timing-its probably 180 deg off-
