Today I was driving for an hour or so when I pulled up to a traffic light I tried to brake but I lost the power assist. I was still able to brake put it was difficult without the power brakes. Any idea what it could be?

Yes; you lost the power assist. Did the assist come back later? If so, stop the engine, wait a few seconds, then see if you have two or three power-assisted pedal applications. If you do not, the first suspect is the check valve in the power booster.

Also check the vacuum hose while the engine is running to see if it is soft and collapsing. You can pull the check valve out of the booster too and feel if there's good vacuum there with the engine running. If there is good vacuum, you may have a failed power booster, but that isn't real common.
