Wet car wont run

I have a 1998 vw jetta wlfs. When it rains out the car runs fine if I don't give it gas. (Idle speed) if I can get it started, but as soon as I give it gas sputters and dies. I have changed plugs, wires, distrubator cap and rotor, igtion coil. What could be the problem please help.

Hello,
My 2000 VW Jetta VR6 has very similiar issues. If there is really heavy rain for a full day, and I attempt to start it that night or the next day, It will start normally but the idle will be very weird and the exhaust has a weird smell to it on occasion. Also if you attempt to drive into gear, it is very difficult to not stall the car. But if you are reving high it should go. My recommendation with this issue is to let it dry out. I would also like an explanation about this as it sucks to deal with :(
