I have been driving my car daily. A couple of weeks ago it started running rough. I replaced the fuel pump, the fuel filter and it didint help. I then replaced the coil and points and it was still running rough. It would idle fine for a little while, but would not run. I then replaced the carburetor. When I tried to start it then, I had very little spark coming from the coil. From another web site, it gave instructions how to check the coil with an ohm meter and it checked out within their limits. I tried running a hot wire from the battery to the coil, with no change from the spark to the coil. My questions is, what could be causing this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may have bought a defective set of points. And check for "sideplay" in the distributor shaft. If it runs, hook up a dwell meter check dwell, it should only change by 3% reving to 1500, at least those were the old 8 cyl numbers!

No dwell meter or feeler gauge. Vacuum time it, adjust it till you get the highest vacuum and back it up just a littel so that it won't detonate/ping.

Adjust A/F mix-then curb idle then your done.

NOTE: Ignition timing won't change Dwell but Dwell will change the Ignition timing.

Good old days Bo Bo wagon-you can go a very long way w/a full tanker.

Actually, you have a standard beetle, the super came out in 71.
Anyways, yes, you could have gotten a bad set of points, or more likely, a bad condenser.
