Recently my shifter has gotten out of whack and Drive has now moved to 4th gear. The slats in between wrinkle when I try to move out of park. I thought maybe I could just get them back on track, but I don't even know how to get the casing open to start.

If it has a full center console you will have to remove the entire thing to gain access to the shifter to repair it. There should be screws in the sides and at the bottom of the storage compartment. If no console, the housing should have screws in the side that hold it on, and the shift knob will probably have to come off too, there may be a set screw in the front of the knob that holds it on

Can anyone tell me the parts name? I don't want to look crazy at the dealer repair shop by calling it the slats that slide.

Probably a shifter bezel. The parts person can bring up a picture of the shifter and you can point at exactly what you want. We do it all of the time
