Catalytic Converter rattling - how to test it?

My catalytic converter is rattling. I realize that I will need to replace it or it will not pass emissions inspections. However, I was wondering whether driving the car in this condition will damage the car any more and whether the car will eventually brake down. Can you show me how to replace it?
