Has a stuck transmission solenoid code. However, it does shift okay, but if you put try to accelerate with any more than a granny foot the engine light will begin to flash and there's almost no power whatsoever. Like driving a bug with only one cylinder. If you continue the whole car will just shut down. After this happens, we also get an odd harmonic humming in the intake box at idle. The guy has been driving it for a year like this just granny footing it. It'll get up to highway speeds just if you do it very slowly. When it started his oil pressure gauge stopped working, however it can't be that. There's no ticking or rattling of lifters and it revs fine in park or neutral. The whole thing is a mystery. All gears are working. The humming that comes and goes from the air breather before the filter is even weirder. Never seen anything like it. No loss of oil or coolant, transmission fluid smells off but is full. Idles well. The only thing is a stuck solenoid code and a bad oil pressure sensor which is common. It kicks the gears down like it should but all power in the engine is way reduced. What could it possibly be?

Hi,

Which solenoid is bad? Could you tell me the code you found? Also, the loss of power and the noise you mentioned, have you checked to make sure the catalytic converters aren't plugged, and you are hearing unvented pressure?

I would suggest removing the upstream O2 sensors to see if any of the power returns.

The idea of the flashing engine light usually indicates a misfire. Has fuel pressure been checked? If excessive, it may have caused issues with the converters. Also, have you checked the short-term fuel trims?

I'm sorry I have so many questions. I noted you are a mechanic. I just need to get a better understanding of what has been checked.

Let me know about the catalytic converter. That is my primary suspect at this point.

Take care,

Joe

It's the primary control solenoid in the valve body that's making the code. Don't remember offhand the actual code, but I do know it's in the valve body and costs $599.00 for just the part. I've smashed out the cat. So, if it was plugged it's not now. The airbox itself is vibrating, I've checked for leaks using ether around the upper intake while it was running. Was going to test the TPS this weekend to see if it was sending false signals. A plugged fuel filter or bad pump couldn't have kept it going this long.

Is the airbox cracked, damaged, or plugged? I'm trying to determine what would make it vibrate. Can you record it and upload it for me to hear?
