2004 f150 5.4 runs great when cold and down the road until warmed up and is intermittent then sounds like a diesel. Was told it might be cam phasers but have to believe it is the VCT seleniods. Have not cleaned throttle body, MAF yet. Also have rough idle when the noise appears. Codes include p0022, p0171, . Other codes that appear but have not checked spark plugs, etc, 0300, 0305, 0307. My concern is the ticking or knocking sound. VCT or Cam phaser

These motors have always been FULL of problems. Makes me wonder sometimes why they used them for as long as they did. The cam phasers are most likely the culprit. Its a fairly common and expensive issue they run into.

As many said, yeah phasers get gunk and junk in them and stop working right. To do it right is about a $3000 job easy as most like to install new timing components, and put a higher flow oil pump. Another fix in areas outside emissions is called a livenois kit which fixes the phasers so they can't work anymore. Still looking at $1500-$2k however in a shop.
