Brakes problem
2004 Toyota Rav4 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

The mechanic who did my annual safety inspection told me my car passed but will need new front brake pads soon. I have 42,000 miles and this would be the first time replacing them. He quoted me $180. I called a local Toyota dealer who told me (over the phone without seeing the car) that they recommend changing the rotors AND the pads for $480. I asked how much to replace the pads only and they said $90 total but they don't recommend it. Isn't the point of changing the pads (before they go bad) to save the rotors? Also, what do you think of the price quotes?

The quote for 180 sounds right. Rotors need to be machined first before they can be deteremined to be bad or not. There isnt a single chance of getting brakes done at the dealer for $90. Id probably go with the first guy. Even if you need rotors from him you will get out for less

You must be aware of the min rotor thickness, rear rotors min thickness is 8mm or below must be scrapped
