We have 87.000kms on the clock and we've been 'advised' to change the serpentine belts, water pump etc before taking a 2.000 km trip. Will be using motorway mostly. What to do? Normally Rav 4 doesn't need this kind of work till about 105.000KMS. We don't have money to burn getting maintenance when none is needed. Car is regularly maintained and well looked after. 2 careful drivers.

It is worth it to have this done by a mechanic. Instant oil change facilities do this with proper tools and quickly for less money. Can be very tricky to do in Japanese cars because of tight placement of the belt.

Using a breaker bar and appropriate sized socket (or appropriate drive belt removal tool), relieve the belt tension by rotating the tensioner. Do this slowly over about 3 seconds. Remove the belt from the pulleys. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to follow the belt routing diagram.
