EGR Valve?

just replaced head gasket, all timing parts, timing cover, valve job, new plugs.

I have rich fuel smelling black smoke when engine is idling cold. Idle is rough and engine dies a lot especially at stops. Runs jerky at low speeds.

When engine is warm, at least halfway on the temp. Gauge, idle is great. No black smoke, no rich smell, no jerky performance.

I looked at the choke and it seems to work fine. The truck sat for 7 years before I bought it. I have tried STP Carb cleaner in fuel. A friend recommended checking the EGR Valve. Does this make sense? How do I do that?

Thanks! - John Benson

What I think it is is the choke thermostat or pull off, the pull off is usually a vacuum operated dashpot, it pulls the choke open slightly when it starts. Check that and the tension on the choke when the engine is cold, adjust it cold!
