My car recently (last 1-2k miles) started losing oil, pretty fast about 2 quarts in 1k. I have no smoke, no signs of oil in the coolant and no drips under the car and no "oiliness" iat the tailpipe. There is a heavy buildup around the head gasket area near the front cover that started happenning about the same time. My mechanic says that he doesn't know where the oil is coming and that buildup is normal in high mileage 4 cyl. I think it has to do with the problem but he says I may need to rebuild the engine. Should I take it somewhere else?

I had the same car same year. I did some research on line and found a toyota mechanic that had this car and was having the same problem. Turns our this year car was a lemon as the engines were defective and prone to having this issue. If you keep the car, you'll spend big money on catalitic converter and then an engine. I loved this car but when the mechanic told me to trade it in I did. Turns out Toyota never took responsibility for it but did fix the problem when they produced the 2003 model. Dump the car while you still can.
