I have a code of p0741 I know it is a common problem, I have had another corolla and matrix with the same code I know the what it means but what is the most common repair

I have recently have had this problem. My friends are telling me my cars done is this true????

Also when it all happned my RPMs jumped to 4 and then back to 2 . and when i went to park i couldnt go into reverse until i reved the engine some and then i could go in reverse but i couldnt go into Drive. i waited about 5 min turned the car off and then restarted the car and everything was fine. im changing my Transmission filter this weekend because my fluid is a browning color but not a burnt smell. any help with this would be great
