Possible idle control valve need to be cleaned
have to get it scanned for codes and check idle air valve position when stalling and hard to idle
do also fuel pressure test
check PCV valve and vacuum leaks.

This guide will help us fix it.

When slowing to a stop after driving for a while, the engine dies. It usually will not start unless one of the following is done: step on the accelerator or turn off the air conditioner. When it is restarted the idle is about 150 rpm slower than normal. If you then drive it and stop after a bit, the idle RPM is back to normal. Very hard to recreate.

Whenever the dying is happening the rpms are lower than normal.

Thanks.

It sounds like you might have a throttle body problem with the IAC. Pretty sure that particular make and model has an electronic throttle body. I would cleaning it first. Make sure the key is off when you clean it.

Have the throttle body cleaned. While replacing the starter, the battery was disconnected and this would result in the engine computer resetting itself and needs to relearn.

As the throttle body and IAC are dirty, the controlled amount of air entering the engine would be lesser than the required amount due to dirt restricting air volume.

Cleaning the throttle body and IAC would increase the idling speed and prevent stalling.

If you are unable to clean the throttle body or IAC, then you need to drive around until the computer relearns and stabilises the idling speed.

Is the check engine light on? That would be the first place to start.

If you get a code, get back with me and we'll go from there.

Also, if you don't have any codes, you should have your car drive tested by a technician with the know how to use a scanner and read the live data on all your sensors and computers.

A competent tech will be able to recognize a sensor out of spec.

Dear Sirs,

My wife's car is a 2002 Toy Camry with a 2,4 liter engine. I have twice tried cleaning the throttle body, replaced the fuel pump and sock, and replaced the spark
plugs. What will happen is when the car is driven, out of the blue, the idle will get erratic, the goes lower, then stalls out. After about 5 to 10 minutes, she can restart the car. So far this does not leave any codes for me to go by. Have you ever encountered this before?

Starter was recently replaced but I can't see what that has to do with this problem. No vacuum leaks and I did use a MAF cleaner to spray the MAF sensor. I recently had the altenator tested and it shows good. Charging will go down with extremely low Idle.

Need help!!! ru4el4@cox.net Melvin N.

Hello .. thanks for the donation .. much appreciated Try removing and cleaning the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) .. sometimes when the sensor is very dirty ar worn/damaged it sends incorrect or no signal to the ECM, especially when the engine is normal operating temperature.. this should in theory set a DTC (fault code) and show up on a scan .. but it is not always the case !! Camshaft & Crankshaft Position Sensors (Camry 2.4L 4-Cyl. & Camry Solara 2.4L 4-Cyl.) Camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor deliver input signals to Engine Control Module (ECM). Camshaft position sensor may also be referred to as Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor. Camshaft position sensor is located on end of cylinder head at flywheel end of engine. Crankshaft position sensor is located on front of engine, near crankshaft pulley. ECM may use input signals for determining ignition timing (spark advance), and for controlling fuel injection system and VVT system. Crankshaft Position Sensor (2.4L)...On left front of engine. near the crankshaft pulley Hope this helps .. let me know

It turns out I misinterpreted the symptoms that my wife described to me. When I questioned her closely about it, it turned out to be more of a problem with the "cheapo" starter I bought a month and a half ago.
It overheated and drained the battery during cranking
and slowed down the idle when it did start. This wound up acting like something else altogether.
Thanks for the answer anyway. It has not acted up since I replaced the defective starter.

This is an intermittent problem, happens every couple months. After cold start and 10 minutes of warm up, at a stop, engine cuts off and idle can not be sustained. Restarting is difficult and requires stepping on gas pedal. During this time engine runs rough and cannot be kept alive at all. After waiting for 10 minutes or so with engine off, engine comes back to normal.

Toyota dealer could not diagnose the problem, their computer does not detect anything. Of course by the time we take the car to the dealer, this effect is over! Dealer has replaced the Idle Control Valve, but this did not fix the issue.

Hello

To better assist you please tell me if your model is a LE, SE, Solara SE, Solara SLE, or XLE. Also the engine size in liter and the 8th digit of your VIN.

Hello

I apologize one other thing. Please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or OReillys (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you dont get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery and alternator.

The Camry is SE, 8th digit in VIN is K.
Note dealer scanned the vehicle several times, no bad codes came up!
So, what could be the issue?

Hello

There are several things that can cause these symptoms. There are a couple of sensors, MAF, Intake Air temperature and Coolant. A defective engine coolant temperature sensor can cause most of the symptoms you are having. You would need a digital volt meter to check..do you have that?

Hi there,

do the tune up first and check the ECU for fault codes, you wont always get a light on with all codes, this may be a faulty TPI sensor, start here.

I have checked the codes and there are no codes.....i was reading and i was seeing that it may be the alternator, the spark plugs, the fuel pump etc. but it drives fine on the freeway or anywhere else as long as your foot is on the gas. No hessitation when you accelerate or anything.....any more help would be great...thank you!

The alternator is the power supplier for the fuel pump, this is so, so if the car is involved in an accident and the ignition is on the pump wont keep running, so you may be on the right track, a faulty alternator may be causing this problem, get this checked.

Guys, my car does not always start from first attempt, it turns over, but does not start. It Sometimes start from first time, and other times start from the second or third attempt. I have cleaned the throttle and ensured that the plugs are fine and the battery is fine too. But no luck

Some told me that the ECM needs to be changed. Did anyone run into

Check the fuel pressure to rule out a clogged fuel filter and a weak fuel pump-could also be losing fuel pressure due to injectors and fuel pressure regulator leaking and a defective coolant temperature sensor-

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry LE V6. One night I was driving it and the car shut off on me. At first I thought it was the alternator, but I got it tested and it was fine. So then I thought it was the battery and I bought a new battery. That seemed to work at first, but then when I started to drive it the car shut off on me again, but this time when I started it up it would come on, but it couldn't stay on unless I pushed the gas pedal and if I went idle the car would turn off. So basically, the car can start up, but it can't stay idle without me pushing the gas pedal.

A Direct Ignition System (DIS) has been adopted. The DIS improves the ignition timing accuracy, reduces the high-voltage loss, and enhances overall reliability of the ignition system by eliminating the distributor.
The DIS is a 1-cylinder ignition system which ignites one cylinder with one ignition coil. In the 1-cylinder ignition system, the spark plug is connected to the end of the secondary winding. High voltage generated in the secondary winding is applied directly to the spark plug. The spark of the spark plug passes through from the center electrode to the ground electrode.
The ECM determines ignition timing and outputs the ignition signals (IGT) of each cylinder. Based on IGT signals, the power transistors cut off the current to the primary coil in the ignition coil. At the same time, the igniter also sends an ignition confirmation signal (IGF) as a fail-safe measurement to the ECM.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:

If DTC P1300/14 is displayed, check No.1 ignition coil with igniter circuit.
If DTC P1305/15 is displayed, check No.2 ignition coil with igniter circuit.
If DTC P1310/14 is displayed, check No.3 ignition coil with igniter circuit.
If DTC P1315/15 is displayed, check No.4 ignition coil with igniter circuit.
Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool, as freeze frame data records the engine conditions when the malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, etc. at the time of the malfunction.
