Electrical problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 184789 miles

The speedometer on my 94 Camry LE is going wacco sometimes while we are driving it the speed reads 140 mph when we are actually traveling around 50 mph then fluctuates speed reading from 10 mph to 140 mph. It doesn't do this on a regular basis but I just want to know if it's something electrical or mechanical and can the repairs be done by a shade tree mechanic?

Hello,

This sounds like the vehicle speed sensor is going out which is located down on the transmission. Here is a diagram (below) of its location so you can change it out.

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken
