I have a 1996 Toyota Avalon, with 117000 miles 6 cylinder. Recently my engine light has come on and I took it to a transmission specialist and code 773 (shift cylinder code) was detected. The mechanic told me not to worry about it because the car runs smoothly (no problem when changing gear no problem with car). Is the adivse of the mechanic reasonable or should I get the problem fix. (Note: the car does need a tune up could this be a possiblity why engine light is on).

The Problem can be overridden by the pcm to keep it running normal, The problem should get fixed. IMHO The shop either is unfamiliar with diagnosing check engine lights or unfamiliar with the technology of cars.

It is not tune up related, if it was there would be other codes. The code has to do with an electrical problem for the lock up solenoid, the solenoid itself or the computer. Probably the second of the two. If you can't find a reputable shop, contact www.snapon.com. The local rep near you can help you find a shop.
