Engine Performance problem
1995 Toyota 4Runner 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 109k miles

hello, please help. I brought my yota to a mechanic to replace head gaskets and after a grand worth of work he informed me that after it was all back together there was a lower rod knocking and the engine was trashed. So $2100 later I have a used engine swapped w/ only 79k on it. After I got it back, being over 3grand into the repair, the car really doesn't idle well, and skips/bucks under steady acceleration starting at about 1500rpm to about 2500rpm. I brought it back to him for the fix and he replaced the spark plugs and wires but is being persistent about it running as good as it's going to, he wants to wash his hands of it. The rough idle is still there, my oil pressure is running in the red for the most part, and it skips just as badly. He had taken out the cat conv. And welded a straight pipe due to the old one being clogged, so I have an engine code#27 that wont clear until I replace w/ a universal cat and new sub o2 sensor(don't know if that could have anything to do w/ it) please help, I don't know how to get this thing running right and can't afford to keep dumping money into it, especially if this guy is trying to do bare minimum to get it out. And I can't listen to my kids singing in the car anymore because of the lovely verbrato it gives them from the skipping ;) any ideas I can bring back to this guy to make him get the job done right?

Hi okeepah,

Sad to hear of your plight and feels angry about the mechanic washing his hands of it.

Most probably you need to check the EGR system.

You mentioned the catalytic converter was removed, don't you have emission regulations?

Thank you. Would the EGR system cause the low oil press though? I can see it causing rough idle, and i'd be annoyed to think he had the whole engine apart and didn't check the valve to make sure it was clean. Then again, he didn't clean the fuel injectors and suggested running a few tanks of hitest through it w/ some injector cleaner so who knows.I added the cleaner and only on my second tank of hitest. Yes, we have emission regs here, but as you can tell, this guy really isn't on the level. He replaced w/ a straight pipe to save me some $ for the time being. I plan on having a universal installed w/in the next few weeks though. Beleive me, i'm a green guy and won't let it go for too long. But after a quote to fix my car for a grand and it being more than 3x as much i'm a little short on cash. I have to bring it back to him anyway because of some leaks he has to fix right, i'll be sure to mention checking out the EGR and have it cleaned. Any more suggestions?

Hi okeepah,

The extent of the engine misfiring is not clear and I believe the spark plugs, wires and any related parts had been checked.

Since you don't have the cat now, try disabling the EGR valve temporarily and see if the problem is solved. From there you would know to elminate this or not.
