I just bought my 'dream car', a 1991 4 Runner. It has an obvious exhaust leak but otherwise runs. I have noticed a few problems though.
#1. It seems to be lacking power. When I accelorate it get up to between 4200-5200rpms before it shifts. I'm hoping it is from the exhaust leak (you can smell) and from all the reading I have done; a plugged catalytic converter. Does that sound right? When you take off slowly from a stop, it is fine, but if you take off quickly or going uphill, it accelorates slowly and shift high.
#2. My gas mileage is terrible! I expect less than great mileage from a vehicle with this engine and size, but it's beyond bad!
#3. My Check Engine light just came on. I have changed the oil/filter, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter and it was running with no warning lights/leaks. Suddenly on the way home from work today the check engine light came on. What could my problem be? I am a girl and do NOT want to take it to a mechanic blindly trusting they'll be honest and tell me the real problem.
PLEASE HELP
