Manual transmission and check engine light

Subaru Outback, 2002, 102,000 miles and 4 cylinder engine. Manual transmission.
When you take off in first it is okay when you shift to second and sometimes third it seems to hesitate or jump or when you brake you have to downshift quickly or it sounds as if it is going to die. And check engine light goes on intermittently. You could start the car ten times and maybe 8 of those times the red light is on. Had a mechanic check the engine light and he said it checked out fine but it continues to happen.
What do you think? Thanks for your time and expertise. Mick

Take the positive side off the battery, leave it off for about 5 minutes, reconnect, the vehicle computer will reset after driving about 50 miles. If the engine light comes back on then show the mechanic so the car can be scanned.
