93 Subaru Impreza 1.8L tranny or gearbox rattle

My subaru impreza has 260,000 miles on it--manual tranny. There is a rattle that sounds like it's coming directly from the gearbox. While in gear, it rattles really loud when I hit about 3000 rpm. It's worse in 2nd and 4th. I've pushed it before to see if it stops. It gets louder and louder and then at around 5000 - 6000 rpm it stops. It also rattles while in neutral if I step on the gas. It actually sounds worse in neutral while accelerating than when in gear. I've also noticed it gets worse in hot weather. I don't know if it's the tranny or something in the gearbox. I was also wondering if it has anything to do with the heat shield. This does not seem to be hindering the car from driving at all, it just sounds like crap. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check with the engine running if it is the heat shield, you might have someone in the car to change the engine speed to hear it. If it is the heat shield you can gently squeeze it tighter at the side ends, sometimes this works and other times new heat shields are needed

Also you can lightly smack the heat shields with a rubber mallet and see if they rattle. Subarus are notorious for noisy heat shields
