What would cause a 2003 Subaru with only 86,700 miles to have leak oil out of the left and right side head gasket? Could this problem be a manufacturer's defect since the car is only five years old and has been serviced on a regular basis?

Sure it is not valve cover gaskets leaking? That would be normal with yrs and milage.

This happened to me last year. The drivers side head gasket was leaking at about 75000 miles. It started small and I tried to ignore the syrup smell for a few months but finally had to get it checked out. I figured i'd be hit with an $800 or more head gasket bill, but surprisingly this is covered under the manufacturers warantee. Apparently this is a common problem. Considering I've never had a problem besides this, I'm still a Subaru believer. Take it in!
