I have a 1957 Chevrolet truck model 3600 that is kicking in the starter when shutting off the truck at the key. The truck has been converted to an alternator and was told I needed to add a diode in the starter circuit. If so, I need to know what size diode, where can I buy one and where it goes in the circuit? I have replace the ignition switch already. Any help appreciated.

Good morning.

How do you have the starter circuit wired? Are you using a neutral safety switch or any other switch in the circuit?

There is no other switch in the circuit that I am aware of except the ignition switch. I do know that the ignition switch has an ignition 1 and 2 on it?

You need a switch that has a specific starting terminal only hot in the start position.

Ignition 1 and 2 is not what you wire the starter to.

Yes okay. I will have to try to track the wiring to see where they go as one of those off the ignition switch has to go to the solenoid to crank the truck. Not sure which one though and what the other does? So not sure where/how this feedback is occurring and where this diode goes, what size it should be and where to place it. I will keep working on it. Thanks

Forget about the diode. If you have the correct switch, it does not need one.

You just need a switch that has a terminal that is hot in start only. That is where the wire for the solenoid attaches.

Yes, right, I do not know more to do on that point. I would think it already has that as it is working correctly when cranking the truck and then de-energized after. If still hot I would think the starter would not disengage when key released. So where it is coming from and how not sure. I will trace the wires to see where they go. The feedback has to come from somewhere. Solenoid back to switch and arcing maybe when de energized? Replaced ignition switch already. Something when the conversion done? Keeping at it. :) Thanks

You are welcome.

You may need to run a new wire from the switch to the solenoid.

Yes, good idea. I am going to trace those wires and see what I have currently first then I will replace that line. Maybe something will show up. Thanks again.
