Have to hold key on for several minutes before engine will crank

Did you meant you have to hold key at cranking position then it will crank engine over or before the engine starts? Clarify

I have to hold key on in the start position for several minutes before engine will crank. Turning the key to start position nothing happens, I hold key in that position for several minutes before starter will crank the engine over.

Check the battery and connections if its good - try shorting out the starter motor if it cranks the egnine over w/o lagging-test the ignition switch
