I purchased this 1984 Chevette in 1985 with 19,000 miles and used it in a kit car. It ran great up until eight years ago. At that time it just would not start or would run for a while and stop. Replaced several parts including the carburetor, rotor, cap etc. To no avail.

The coil was extremely hard to get to due the small kit car engine compartment. I needed to remove the intake manifold to gain access. Once there I found the coil had a broken led and replacing it solved the problem.

Unfortunately the car would now have an issue idling. At stops you needed to work the gas and brake to keep it running or it would stall.

The problem got worse over the years and now it is at a point where it starts fine and runs smooth until you put it into gear at which time it stalls or if you give it gas it starts popping.

Some have blamed the computer which I replaced others claimed it was the wiring. I ran continuity tests on portions of the harnesses but they seem okay.

One led going to the computer registers six volts and I am not sure if this is normal. The tachometer in the dash does not seem to work properly anymore either. Could I have lost another coil?

Not sure where to go from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think you are being too complex in your thinking. I would bet on a vacuum leak or a leak in the intake manifold gasket personally. Over time, the leak has become worse and worse.

If you have not already done these things, you might look into them as well. Replace the PCV valve, clean the EGR valve, clean the throttle body.
