Truck listed above is a 3/4 ton with a big block and four-wheel drive. Writing this for my sister. She tows a two-horse trailer. She stopped at a red light and the check engine light came on and it had no drive, no matter what the gearshift position in the forward gears. She shifted it to reverse and it moved. Shifted back into drive and the light went off, forward drive was restored. This occurred more than once. Sometimes shifting to reverse seemed to restore drive, but sometimes not. I have some experience with transmissions and I feel it's an electrical issue because the check engine light is triggered when the fault occurs. Perhaps wiring damage or a solenoid issue? No issues when the fault does not occur. Shifting is normal and her mechanic recently changed the fluid. No slippage at highway speeds, just an apparent failure to come out of neutral. My sister lives a distance away and I'm trying to give her some direction. Any advice would be appreciated.

Good morning,

There is a pressure control solenoid in the valve body which regulates main line pressure.

Without the code that is set, I am going on my experience here.

If that solenoid hangs open, it will bleed off all the pressure and it will not move. It has an electrical harness inside the pan that controls it from the engine ECM. I would check the harness in the pan for any damage or fluid in the harness. Disconnect the harness at the transmission and check the connector. If it has fluid in the connector, replace the internal harness in the transmission.

I attached a wiring diagram for you to vie but the controls are handled by the ECM. You would need a scan tool for OBD1 and monitor the action of the solenoid controls.

Thank You very much. This sounds like the connection between the no-drive state and the check engine light. I have found it has a 4L60 transmission and it is controlled by the ECM, just as you say. I'll tell my sister show this to her mechanic. Stay safe.
