Gas tank door latch non-working

I can't get my gas tank door latch to release, thus opening my gas tank door. No open door, no gas! And I am low on gas. The trunk latch release, which is in front of the gas tank release works, but the gas tank one doesn't. I don't want to break into the door and mess it up, is there a way to open this door without the 'release' button thing? I know it is probably something wrong with the wiring, but I need to get gas before I can get it to a garage. Please help!

Its a 1997 SDN, four-door with about 9300 miles

Hope you got it opened. It is a cable system. Someething either is stuck or came loose somewhere.
Let us know.

I hope you got your gas tank cover open! I believe that this happened to my 1997 SW1 before I bought it. If don't care that the cover is always slightly ajar, you can probably wedge a knife or something similar in far enough to bend the bracket on the door that catches the locking mechanism, then your door won't lock and it doesn't matter if the cable system is not working anymore. Good luck!
