1999 Saab 9-5 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 173k miles

The gearbox light comes on intermittently. Does this mean I need a new engine? Is the car driveable until it is fixed?

U need to get transmission codes read, it may be something simple at this stage, vehicle can loose mobility at anytime even while on highways at high speed driving, good luck.
