2001 Renault Clio Manual 60000 miles

An exhaust warning light has begun to flash all of a sudden and at the same time the car/exhaust now judders & spits every few seconds.
I get the feeling it might be serious!

This light can flash for numerous reason's. I suspect you simply have a bad coil/spark plug (misfiring) causing excess exhaust emmissions. Have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer. Most good repair centres do this. This wil tell you/the tech where the fault actually lies !
