I have an 85 944 auto 85000 miles. I started it up the other day backed out of my driveway switched from rev to neutral car ran rough for couple of seconds and stalled, which it has never done before. When I tried to start it the starter just spun not engaging the engine. Bought a new oem starter and installed it and the same thing happened. The teeth on ring gear look brand new. My question, is it possible the timing belt just broke, and if it did will the starter just spin and cause these symptoms? Also as I was not moving and the car just stalled is it possible there will be no engine damage? Is a timing belt replacement some thing you can do yourself, do you need any special tools?Who has the best repair manuel for this kind if repair?

Hi there,

You will have to remove the top belt cover and check if the cam is turning when cranking. That the easy bit. If the cam belt has failed (these should be replaced every 80,000 Kms not to sure what that is in miles) Engine damage will normally occure. There are two belts on this engine Cam & ballance shafts. This is a not a job for a backyard mechanic There are special tools and tension gauges required I do advise not to try this one yourself unless you can get the equipment you need.
