To whom it may concern. My mother-in-law has a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. She says its running at very high rpms. When idleing with her foot off the accelerator its running at about 2000 rpms. When she accelerates it goes up to 4000-5000 rpms. Also the check engine light is on. Does this sound like a O2 sensor problem or something else? Hope to hear from you soon thanks, Randy.

Randy,
It sounds like an idle air control valve (IAC) or a throttle position sensor (TPS). However, to be sure, you need to have the computer scanned. If the check engine light is on, there will be a code in the computer. Take the car to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer. Most stores will do it for free, so there is no money out of pocket. Once they scan it, you will know what is causing the problem.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
