97 Grand am 3100 v6 100,000 miles. I just removed the manifold to replace the manifold gasket and the inside is coated with a not rediculouse but descent amount of sludge. What is the best way to clean this out and does this result from a lubricant that needs to be there. Should I go crazy with the carb cleaner and clean it dry? I have no idea what goes through here or how to prepare it to build back up.

One thing to keep in mind is that you want to keep as much as possable from going down into the motor. That stuff will plug the oil pick-up tube in the oil pan. After you are done you will want to change the oil and on the next couple of oil changes you may want to add some engine flush before changing to try and get whats left out.
