Jimmy,
They replaced the fuel pump and it's running fine
now. My daughter just called though and said her
check engine light came on. So, I don't know
what's up with that.

Lynne thank you for the info. I ordered the fuel pump online and saved 100 dollars compared to buying it locally at the autoparts store. It should come in by the end of this week hopefully so I can put it on this coming weekend. I should be posting something the first part of next week to see if my engine light or any thing else comes up. Thank you once again for all your feedback.

This car is a four door GT. I replaced the driver's side power window regulator and turned the key to the on position to test it before reassembling the door panel. Everything was fine. I plugged in the three leads for the door switch power windows, locks and mirrors and turned the key on again to test. I started testing the power mirror switch and heard a "pop". At this time the dash lights began to flicker and nothing would work. After turning the key off and on again the dome and dash lights would just flash on and off dimmly and turning the key to on or start would just turn everything off. I hooked up my battery charger and tried again and everything was super bright like it was getting too much juice. I tried the power window and it worked but made a louder than normal hum when going up and down. I quickly turned off the charger. Now when I turn the key to the first position the check engine light comes on but as soon as I turn the key to on or start everything goes off and there is no power of any kind. Sometimes I remove the key and the BCM starts clicking under the glove box. I tested the battery with a voltmeter and it only shows about 4.5 volts when the cables are attached and 11.5 volts when the cables are disconnected. I checked all the fuses that had a related description and didn't find any blown. I'm hoping it's not the BCM but I don't know how to verify if it's good or bad or what my next troubleshooting steps should be. Thanks.

My car is finally fixed the problem was the fuel pump. I installed it myself it took me about an hour to do. I ordered the pump on EBAY through an auto store named GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE for 114.00 plus 13.00 ship & handling. Locally I would have paid 240.00 on up. Car runs great now.

There is most likely corrosion on the battery cables and or a leaking positive post on the battery. Before you put on any parts, clean the battery cables real good.

I recently learned of a way to check diagnostic codes on my 97 Dodge Ram w/o a diagnostic tool.(Turning the key off/on 3 times, then counting the flashes of the check engine light and consulting a code chart) Is there a similar option on my 2000 Grand Am by any chance? We pulled out of the driveway, saw the 'service engine soon' light, and the car made a loud noise when shifting gears, though it still functioned in both forward and reverse. We parked it right away.

Sorry, you can't do that with GM. At the least, you need an obd2 code reader.

These are called flash codes, you can't get flash codes off your system, you will require an OBD 11 scanner.

Take car to some autoparts stores and get codes read for free ("P" codes).

However, they cannot scan ABS codes, for this you will need a chassis scanner ("C" codes).

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis,finding out what's going on.

Hi;
I own a 2001 pontiac grand am gt. About 6 months ago my car wouldn't start; I had it towed to a shop; they couldnt find anything wrong at that time.A few months later my service engine light came on. I switched to a higher grade of fuel and it went off. However a month later came back on. A second time I couldnt get my car started; it turned out to be the fuel pump and that cost me lots of money to fix. They can't figure out what is causing the service engine soon light to come on. About 2 weeks ago I noticed while driving home my brakes were grabbing and then my abs & trac off light and check vehicle soon light came on. It is a mystery to my mechanic what is causing these problems. Any ideas? I'm worried my car will not only fail inspection but cost me more money; I already doughed out over $700 just for a fuel pump and labor costs. Any help would be appreciated.
