1999 Grand Am idling too fast

I have a 1999 Grand Am 3400 V6 with 114000 miles on it. Occasionally when I start this car it idles way too fast. Tapping the accelerator will not slow it down. I have to turn it off (sometimes several times) and restart it to get it to slow down. What could be the problem and can I fix this myself?

If this is when the engine is warm, check the Idle air control valve, it's on the side of the throttle body, take it off and clean it, if it improves you may need a new one if the plunger motor is dieing.
