I want to be sure I am not being taken in regard to a heater core. What is it and what does it do? How is it 'diagnosed'?

It looks like a small radiator and is located under the dash. Hot coolant from the engine passes through it, then the blower pushes air through it to create hot air for the interior. Usually a pressure test of the cooling system or wet carpet on the passenger side floor is a good indicator.
