Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Automatic 152, 00 miles

My car dies while idiling at a red lights and running my ac. Very recently it started doing it while I'm driving on the freeway. I don't use my ac anymore, shift into neutral at lights and get premium gasoline. But the problem is getting worse. I've changed the fuel filter, oil filter, Pcv valve, and air filter. What do you reccomend doing next?

By shifting into neutral while idiling (at red lights) and revving the engine I can temporarily keep the car from dying. It always restarts, but shuts down again not long after. I've noticed hot weather seems to intensify the problem.

How do I increace the idle speed on my 2000 V6 Firebird?

Why is my car shutting down while I'm driving?

Start with the basics, Plug and new wires or check the coils if they are coil on plug. Next clean the throttle body with a rag and TBI cleaner, do this with the engine OFF! Rag will be sucked into a running engine. If it doesnt help, check for vacuum leaks, spray intake manifold area and vacuum hoses with TBI cleaner, if idle changes you have found a leak. Next it your air filter stock? If it's aftermarket oil soaked type, replace the MAF, last is the idle air control valve, it's bolted to the throttle body, idle speed is not adjusteble anymore. Most important, if the service engine light is on, have the code(s) read and post them, autozone reads them for free.
