I have coolant loss from under the water pipe that passes through the engine, could this be caused by a faulty water pump which is on the opposite end?

If the line corroded not due to any fault to the water pump You may have to remove the water pump and intake manifold to gain access to the line and its a lot of work to but back an old semi retired water pump and should replaced it if that is the case.
