1996 Plymouth Breeze brake issue

1996 Plymouth Breeze

The last couple of winters my wife's Plymouth Breeze has an issue when it gets bitterly cold outside (we live in Wisconsin).

The power brakes seem to fail and the pedal can barely be pushed down when it gets bitterly cold. We are able to stop the car, but I don't want her driving around with this problem. She had a brake job this summer (pads, drums, etc.), So we've verified that those weren't the issue.

We've taken it into a couple local places the last 2 years, but of course it won't do it when it's in the garage and they don't have any idea. Usually when it has a chance to warm up it starts to work all right.

My assumption is there is water somewhere causing something to freeze up. Beyond that, I have no clue.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you-
Andy

Check vacuum hose to the brake booster for collapsing and also check the check valve at the booster.

If the hose is not pliable, but stiff or mushy, replace it. The check valve should only allow one way air flow.

The brake booster is located behind the master cylinder and a large black hose coming off of it is the one to look at.
