2000 Nissan Sentra transmisson struggling to get to next ge

My car struggles to get to the next gear when it does it runs fine I took it to a shop and they told me the car transmisson was shot, I dont believe them because the car still drives, it goes into reverse fine, its just when it stops and drives again its struggle
