Engine wont turn over

I have a 1989 Nissan pulsar with a GA16i engine manual transmission. When I try to start it there is a funny sound when it tries to turn over. I don't know what is causing it but ist seems like it is trying to turn over but I don't like trying to turn on the car with the noise it makes. Is the engine bad? Can it be rebuilt if it is? Or is it something simple? I have had this car for 10 years and I don't want to give up on it so can someone please give me some help?

In order for us to help you. You need to describe this funny noise. Is it some kind of a grinding/whining/squealing/knocking etc noise?

Is it coming from the starter location or the front of the engine

I'm not sure it has been a few months since I tried to start it I guess this weekend I will try to start it up to see and get back to you then
