Oil Change Instructions Please

My wife was told that she had to use Ester oil for the 2009 and 2010 Maxima's, and that this would result in a $56.00 upcharge for an oil change. Is this really necessary and what is the difference between this oil and regular motor oil?

This does sound like they are just trying to upsell you on a better quality oil as they make more money on those oils. It increases their profit margin on oil changes which are not very profitable for them. So in the last 10 years shops have gotten onto the idea that a more expensive oil will increase this margin rather then trying to sell you a whole bunch of other things.
