I have a 1990 Nissan Maxima and my car has been at the shop for wuite a while the past few months. My car has almost 127 thousand miles and it runs fine, my problem is when I start the car. I replaced the starter in September, then I had to replace the distributor cap because I was having problems with moisture. Now when it start the car, it makes a grinding noise, like when the starter was going bad. I took it to the place where they changed it (not my regular mechanic), and they told me that the flywheel was old and that's why I heard the noise, the mechanic told me that it's not worth changing it because I'm getting rid of the car soon anyways (which is true). Everyone it's been telling me that the noise sounds like a starter problem, not the flywheel. When we were trying to find the moisture problem my mechanic put the computer in the car and said that he didn't see any other problems. Can the flywheel of my car affect the starter? And if so, do you think the flywheel will give me a problem in the winter? Do you think I need a new starter again? I just want to know just in case I'm being ripped off.
Thank you

I can only tell you how it is. The starter turns the flywheel with a small high power gear, if the teeth on the flywheel are worn, it will grind, It will also grind if the flywheel isnt shimmed right! If your model uses shims. Most don't!

"shimmed right", what does that mean? Sorry, I am a girl and this is like japanese to me, can I find a way to fix it without spending a lot of money? Am I going to have to replace the starter all the time?

A "shim" is a thin flat metal bar that goes between the stater and were it mounts, it pulls the starter away and gives clearance for the bendix drive(gear) to engage the flywheel.
