What are the ramifications of not replacing the catalytic converter?

The dealer quoted a price of $1200 -> $1500.
Why does it cost so much to replace the catalytic converter?

Defective catalytic converter will suffocate the engine and reduce the volumemetric efficiency in other words the engine is not breathing properly. You can use a test pipe as you wish but come state emission inspection you have to put one On.

Why $$$$ for Cat-maybe bcuz what its made of Platinum and Palladium
