My 98 Altima was idling at warmup the other day and just stopped running. Tried restarting several times over multiple days without any success. I pulled off the cover to check timing chains. Both intact as was the tensioner bar.

Plugs are sparking and fuel is getting to the plugs. When attempting to start the engine is making a steady sound, kind of difficult to really describe.

Any suggestions on what may be going on?

Check the engine compression, that checks out the valve and ignition timing is off.

Yep I agree with RASMATAZ, though the timing chains look intact they could have jumped which will make the engine sounds funny, please go over this video to help see what I am talking about.

Here is how you check the compression to confirm the timing chain issue.
