I need to change my neutral safety switch. Someone tried removing it but the center (larger) bolt is now just spinning. Has this messed up my transmission? Also, how to get this changed now? Thank you in advance for the help.

Good afternoon.

More then likely there is an issue with the shaft that the manual valve is connected to. You can try prying out on the bracket and see if the nut will catch. If not then I suspect the manual valve is broken which should be causing some transmission shifting from park to drive or even starting issue.

Please see below on the entire process on how to replace this switch

I will explain what happen. I had the transmission swapped and I do not remember what caused me to have to switch the neutral safety switch (one thing is my reverse lights stayed on but not the reason of switching) but someone I know (that clearly does not know what they were doing) even though he says he did, did not even bother putting it in neutral before attempting to take off the switch. He starts trying to get the bigger nut off and then I hear how the shaft was freely spinning making it hard to get the nut and switch off. Well, he done something which made reverse lights go off and he tells me all is fine. Well I took for a test drive and it shifted smooth (first test drive after swapping the transmission). I stopped at a store and done my business there. I left from there still shifting smooth (only issue at that point that I knew of was my gears was not lined up: drive was 3, neutral was D etc) well I go thru the drive through of McDonald's and while waiting I put in park. Well, when I put it in drive it would not do anything. I can hear it engaging (well reverse I could definitely hear) but it would not move. You could at this point crank it in every gear. If you dropped it down in lower gears and cranked it up it would jump forward. I do not know I am just frustrated for letting people touch it. I think I covered it all, lol. I am sorry for such a long message.

No problem.

This is what happens when you use used parts.

It definitely sounds like you have a bad neutral safety switch as that controls the gear showing as well as the starting in park and neutral.

Did they drop the pan and change the oil/filter in the transmission?
