Engine Cooling problem
1998 Mitsubishi Montero 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 200K miles

My 98 Montero gets hot in traffic on warm days. If I am moving at 40+ MPH the truck temperature is OK but when in stop and go traffic the temp quickly heats up. I have flushed the radiator and changed the thermostat but that did not fix the problem. When I first start the engine the fan appears to be working fine but I can't tell when I am moving down the road. Is this a fan clutch problem? If so how do you change the fan clutch?

Hi pdv,

If the fan free wheels easily without much friction when cold, the clutch has run dry.

Clutch oil is available and you can replenish by stripping the fan clutch.

Remove 4 pcs of nut and the fan is free. You have to remove fan shroud for easy removal. Loosen belt to enable easy and proper installatiion of fan.

I replaced the fan clutch but still have the problem.

Do I need to replenish the clutch oil when replacing the fan clutch? I did not see a place to replace the oil. Is it in the fan clutch itself or somewhere else?

Hi pdv,

If it is a new clutch fan, no need to replenish.

You need to remove the bolts holding the clutch housing together and separate them to replenish the oil.
