I was driving my car about 45mph when my cat stalled. I initially heard a high pitch whine, then my cat stalled. I put the car in park and then could not move the transmission out of park. When I tried to restart my car, it would crank but not turn. The sound was almost like it would be a dead battery, but lights, radio, and windows all worked.

What could this be?

Are you able to crank the engine? Crank means the engine is turning. If there is only a click and the engine does not turn, means it is not cranking.

If the engine is cranking and not firning up, it is a different.

Whining noise before the engine cutting out does not sound good.

Check if there are any engine oil.

For further diagnosis for not starting, click the " First Things To Check " link at bottom of post.

Engine is firing but not turning over. I checked the oil and it was fine.

Could it be computer related? Since the engine is cranking but not firing and I cannot release the car out of park, I did not know if the computer module would control all of these functions.

Thanks!

Check if the stop lights are working. When the stop lights fails, you would not be able to shift out of park.

That could mean you have a blown fuse which can cause non starting.
