1997 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have 1997 Mercury sable, I drove it through a water puddle recently and after I did, my car stalled out and couldn't start it again. I had a mechanic look at it and he said I threw a rod and will need to buy a new engine. If this is true, what is the average cost for a used car engine and what should I expect to pay a mechanic to install it?

How deep was the water? Did you hear a knocking prior to the engine shutting?

Let me know. If the water was deep enough to have been sucked into the intake, he may be right. But I need to know how deep the water was.
