I have a 96 mercury mystique gs. I gave it a tune up recently cause it had a rough idle and I thought if was low on oil cause I heard a tapping noise coming from somewhere whithin the engine. I drove it the other day and I heard a pop and my car went completly dead. I figured out my timing bel came loose due to the fact that the idler broke to pices. I got a new one put it on and now my car will only start when I push on the gas and turn it over at the same time. If I let off the gas it wil die automatically. I dont know if it was tdc, im not really sure where or how to get it there. There are not timing marks on well anywhere that im aware of. There is a white dot on the right crank wheel and an orange line on the left rocker arm. I did a diagnostic chech and no codes came up. So I am stuck now and dont know where to go from here. Maybe if I had a diagram of tdc and well just how to do it coectly that would be good if thats even my problem. I bought a chilton repair manuel but its not in good detail.

Put the engine no.1 piston on its compression not on the exhaust stroke-now line the markings at the crank then use an alignment tool for the camshafts-See below
