HELP, I have a 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7, 4.6l V-8 with auto trans and about 123,000 miles on it, in great condition but is driving me and a few very good tech's crazy. A few months ago while driving along all of a sudden the car started to try and stall out. If I took my foot off of the accel. It would stay at idle but if I tried to go it would stall out again. If I very slowly stepped on the pedal it would eventually get going but it would then die and go, die and go so I thought maybe the fuel filter. I managed to get it home with the flashers on and when I went out a while later it started and ran fine. Changed filter and jury rigged a pressure gauge to check this and it's fine, 32-40lbs to this day. I brought it to Ford and they could find nothing wrong as some days it would run fine and others it act crazy. I checked everything I was able to with my limited test equipment and all checked out. I had to change the IAC as the plud was broken and I thought maybe that was it, no dice. Finally my friend that is the Top Gun at the Ford dealership told me that the next time it does this to un-plug the MAF and see what happens. I did this and it ran fine for about a week so I plugged it back in and it ran fine for about another week then back to the same old crazy stuff. He was ablr to come over the house with his extensive Ford/Rotunda scanner and was able to get the code for a bad MAF. I went and bought a new one at the parts store and he was upset that I did'nt buy a Motorcraft part and it showed the same code, PO102-low MAF voltage and P1000 more driving to complete test but it wouldn't drive, went back and got another, same result and I found it hard to believe that I got 2 bad ones in a row, so they gave me a refund and I spent the extra for a Motorcraft MAF. I installed it to his instructions and it started fine, so I drove it around the area and all seemed good, so I guess it was the cheaper MAF. Now, after about 100 miles, just today I went out to go to the store, started up and when I stepped on the pedal, its starting to do it all over again, touch the pedal and it trys to die out, quickly hooked up the FP gauge, 32-40lbs so its not fuel pressure, although thats what it feels like going by seat of the pants. I have checked and cleaned every ground and connector I can find but now I'm ready to push it in the river. ANY and ALL help or ideas would keep me from going nuts at this point, thanks,

Tom C.

When Fords star bucking they can be tough! Make sure all plug wires ar good, then check the EGR system, if it opens at the wron time it could be the EVR thats the solinoid the opens and closes it, two electric wire and two vac lines on it. Some times the throttle body must be removed to get the carbon out underneath it, if all else fails check for vacuum leaks at the corners of the intake manifold, get some spray gummout, and spray vac lines and around the intake, if the idle changes you have a leak! Also check the air induction plenum for any cracks, any unmetered air will wreak havoc! Also check that MAP!

I have a 1994 Mercury cougar RX7. The issue that I am having is while I’m driving the car will automatically start surging. Can anybody help me with the reason why this would happen? I’ve changed out the mass flow sensor, idler sensors, fuel mixture sensor. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
